Nearly 240 steel industry representatives and technology providers, from a dozen countries worldwide, gathered at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh on March 26-29, 2019, for the AIST’s first-ever major Digital Transformation Forum for the Steel Industry. To this event, CIVS and SMSVC Director Dr. Chenn Zhou brought 10 years of expertise in advanced visualization technologies, a much-complimented vision for steel industry technology advancement, and a presentation on “Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Visualization for Digital Transformation.”
While the conference provided an arena for steel manufacturers and suppliers to interface with technology providers and explore opportunities for business-need developments, many participants were there primarily to gain understanding about the ‘Industry 4.0’ technologies that would most make sense for them.
“Challenges to technology adoption in the steel industry were discussed both formally and informally over the course of nearly thirty technical sessions, as were the benefits of improved operational efficiency and stable production,” Zhou said. “And numerous presentations surveyed the development and (some) current use of technologies such as deep learning, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing.
“But, the best comments and highest compliments we at CIVS received, were from the participants who said, Out of all those presentations, the CIVS presentation really showed us the future.”
