Purdue University Calumet is working to enhance the local profile of a campus center that has a global reputation for leading research projects that have saved companies millions of dollars. At a breakfast presentation Wednesday, university personnel and representatives from companies in the region and abroad shared success stories and made a marketing pitch for the school’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation. The multidisciplinary center uses simulation techniques with 3-D visualization and virtual reality technologies. HAMMOND | Chenn Qian Zhou’s engineering students at Purdue University Calumet work on real-world problems from energy companies, the steel industry, refineries and vehicle parts manufacturers, nationally and internationally.
They are working fast thanks to a supercomputer that was moved to make room for the Steele supercomputing cluster on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.

AISI Board members were taken on an immersive 3-dimensional simulated tour of a virtual blast furnace thanks to Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling technology developed by Purdue University Calumet under an ongoing AISI/Department of Energy (DOE) research grant. Donning 3-D glasses, viewers experience the Advanced Simulation and Virtual Reality Visualization for Steel Manufacturing exhibit by getting “inside” structures—including a blast furnace— to gain a better understand of the complex phenomena involved in the processes.read more ... This year, PUC’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) received a federal grant of $749,853 tosupport the project Mixed Reality Simulators for Wind Energy Education.
According to the press release, this project involves developing five wind simulators to train university students and professionals about wind energy.

The Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) Midwest Chapter sponsored a one-day seminar at Purdue University Calumet on November 10th, 2010. The event was designed to reach high school juniors who have the potential and interest to pursue a college degree in the field of engineering. The AIST invited Lake and Porter County schools to participate in this one-day program. The morning session included speakers from the steel industry to promote various engineering disciplines and job opportunities available throughout Northwest Indiana. The afternoon was filled with student and industry networking, campus tours and a presentation by Center for Innovation through Visualization & Simulation discussing simulation and virtual reality and how this cutting edge technology creates a more immersive and more collaborative environment for engineering design and improvements.read more ...
