CIVS Director Dr. Chenn Zhou was an invited speaker at ArcelorMittal’s Americas Energy Roundtable 2017, on Wednesday, October 18, where she shared examples of CIVS projects finding energy efficiencies for the steel industry. Nine teams of CIVS-mentored and affiliated undergraduate students (25 students) in the Department of Mechanical and Civil Engineering have been awarded Fall 2017 research grants as part of PNW’s Undergraduate Research Grant (URG) Program. These grants, which fund up to $600 to cover research expenses for group projects that PNW students conduct with faculty members, will lead to research results being disseminated at a PNW research symposium and to oral or poster presentation by the students.read more ... “Is Hate Speech Free?” In his presentation of that topic at Purdue Northwest’s CIVS Theater on Friday, October 13, Professor Robert Jensen of the University of Texas at Austin explored how extreme viewpoints can raise difficult legal and moral questions around a traditional freedom-of-expression ideal. On October 12, a group of steel industry and reheat furnace professionals, heavy on ArcelorMittal acumen, reviewed steel-related CIVS modeling projects in light of actual operations experience—and pronounced the project results as both “accurate” and “very worthwhile.”
CIVS graduate students Xiang Liu and Tyamo Okosun, along with CIVS Director Dr. Chenn Zhou, led the group through completed project data and results in areas ranging from CFD modeling and operations optimization to prediction of mechanical failure and proactive parts replacement. While suggestions for possible future projects were varied in nature and scope, all agreed that continued model validation would provide a desirable basis for research and development.read more ... Nearly 300 high school students from 12 local schools poured through Purdue University Northwest’s campus on Friday morning to get a taste of college life and delve into the ever-advancing world of engineering.
The seminar, hosted by Purdue University Northwest (PNW) and sponsored by the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) Midwest Chapter, included speakers, hands-on engineering workshops, networking opportunities and a chance to tour the campus.

More than 260 high school students toured the interior of a working blast furnace on Friday, October 6, 2017, wearing only their street clothes—and the 3D glasses provided by the Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) at Purdue University Northwest.
The tour was a virtual tour, part of the 10th Annual High School Engineering Seminar sponsored by the Midwest Chapter of the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST). The one-day seminar, organized by ArcelorMittal’s Kelly Dallas, is a forum where high school students interested in math and engineering can learn more about different engineering disciplines and the ever-evolving steel-related job opportunities in those disciplines.read more ... CIVS Senior Research Scientist John Moreland has received another AIST Don B. Daily Safety Grant (“Virtual Root-Cause Analysis for Encouraging Safety Culture and Future Incident Prevention”). Other investigators are Prof. Chenn Zhou and Michelle Block. Prof. Don Gray received an AIST Electrical Engineering Grant (“Advanced Modeling to Optimize and Visualize Strip Flatness”).
