PNW Faculty/Staff Collaboration
CIVS has collaborated with more than 110 Purdue Northwest faculty and staff members in various academic disciplines.
- Wind turbine simulators for technician training
- Groundwater quality simulators
- Spine biomechanics visualization
- 3D microbiology lab for process optimization
- Forensic science virtual reality environment for training
- Flood modeling 3D lab for civil engineering
Example: Flood Modeling 3D Lab for Civil Engineering
Floods can cause immense loss of life and devastate infrastructure systems, economies, and natural habitats. Training civil engineering students in sustainable infrastructure development and flood avoidance/mitigation is crucial for urban planning, yet for most civil engineering programs it is not viable to create physical laboratory setups to simulate flood scenarios. To enable students to explore flooding case studies and gain understanding of dynamic river systems and flooding event variables, infrastructure planning, and flood mitigation strategies, CIVS and PNW staff collaboratively developed an interactive 3D lab module for flood modeling.

Example: Mission Ocean Science Curriculum Visualization Project
In recent Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) examinations of math and science literacy among OECD countries, US 15-year-olds ranked around 25th out of 34 countries in math, and 17th in science, raising concerns that while science and technology fields are expanding and in need of well-educated entrants, many young people are unprepared for these opportunities. Purdue and CIVS faculty and staff, under the sponsorship of the Office of Naval Research, collaborated to help develop and implement Mission Ocean, a physical science curriculum built around a research submarine control room simulation, in which students use networked computers to cooperatively navigate their research submarine and collect data in an immersive, 3D underwater ocean environment. Through the Mission Ocean program, a large number of region students have learned core math and science concepts and strengthened their problem-solving and teamwork skills.
