On October 29th, a multidisciplinary CIVS team visited Steel Dynamics, Inc. in Butler, IN to discuss cutting-edge projects in safety training, engineering simulations, and smart manufacturing. Representing three project teams, the CIVS group toured the different stages of the SDI’s steel production process, including the electric arc furnace, the steel refining line, and the casting line.
Afterwards, the teams divided into separate groups to discuss their projects with the experts at SDI. As part of the SMSVC Safety Project, CIVS Senior Research Scientist John Moreland talked with SDI safety and training representatives about adapting the SMSVC safety training simulators with SDI’s input, showing off the newest application of virtual reality technology to safety training. The SMSVC Electric Arc Furnace Project group of CIVS students Yuchao Chen, Yu Wang, and Qingxuan Liu met with SDI Engineer Nicole Wiley to begin the next stages of the Electric Arc Furnace simulation work. Finally, SDI Casting Manager Yury Krotov met with CIVS Research Engineer Nicholas Walla and student Haoyu Shi to discuss the AIST Digital Transformation Smart Ladle Project, part of a cutting-edge initiative to integrate deep learning technology with steel production processes.
