The international Future Steel Forum: Industry 4.0 conference held June 7-8, 2018, at the Sheraton Warsaw Hotel in Warsaw, Poland, was developed to “look at how innovative technology can be brought together with the sole intention of revolutionising the way steel is made”; given that focus, CIVS Director Dr. Chenn Zhou’s appearance as both an invited lecturer and featured panelist was virtually standard practice.
After delivering her presentation “Simulation, Visualization, and Data Analytics for Smart Steel Manufacturing” on Thursday, June 7, to an audience of nearly 200 fellow international attendees, Zhou participated in an evening discussion panel on Engineering Education and Qualifying the Industry 4.0 Workforce, during which she emphasized the advancements that engineering and technologies have contributed to educational processes and workforce development.
Summarizing the conference, Zhou noted: “Future Steel Forum 2018 had much to offer on many levels, whether the presentations were addressing the general implementation of Industry 4.0 to existing steel plant facilities, the specific use of artificial intelligence modeling for predictive quality and routing, cybersecurity issues, or giving an overview of the world’s first ‘learning’ steel mill.
“It is clear that both internationally and nationally, the steel industry is experiencing the need for, and trying to best adapt with, productive digital transformations, and our industry-partner colleagues are often at the forefront of the transition. Dr. Pinakin Chaubal of ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D provided the Forum’s keynote address, and among the presentations I found most interesting were two by ArcelorMittal and U.S. Steel, on ‘big data, machine learning and stochastic simulation for investment decisions in steel operations,’ and ‘how the Internet of Things can improve steel plant safety.’”
