Story Time for Infants and Toddlers
Library Sprouts provides young children and their families a monthly story time at the public library with a focus on oral language, vocabulary development, print awareness, book knowledge and positive interactions with literacy.
Each Library Sprouts session is based on the Indiana’s Early Learning Development Framework: The Foundations (2015).
The hour-long story time incorporates research-based strategies to foster family literacy and promote developmentally appropriate interactive literacy experiences, including storybook reading, finger plays, songs, flannel board stories, creative movement and dramatic play.
This early literacy program, Library Sprouts, is offered free of charge and is scheduled to meet monthly at each Library throughout the school year.

Growing through Books and Play
Library Sprouts is a unique collaboration between the Westville-New Durham Township Public Library (the Library) and Purdue University Northwest (PNW) Center for Early Learning. In 2014, Library Sprouts expanded to serve families in children at the Wanatah Public Library.
Under the guidance of Dr. Mary Jane Eisenhauer, Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and Director of the PNW Center for Early Learning, PNW early childhood education candidates enrolled in the course “Literacy and the Young Child” plan and implement developmentally appropriate experiences for the young children, facilitate family literacy activities, distribute resources and carry out ongoing evaluation of the program.
Library Sprouts has flourished under the guidance of Dr. Mary Jane Eisenhauer, PNW associate professor of Early Childhood Education. It has been supported by funding from Strosacker Endowment for Early Childhood Education, Dunebrook, Unity Foundation, First Source Bank and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
The PNW Library Sprouts Family Literacy program was recently awarded a $2,857 grant through Kankakee Valley REMC Operation Round Up. Congratulations to Associate Professor Mary Jane Eisenhauer for leading this program that collaborates with the Wanatah and Westville libraries.
